How can I give HOPE to the HOPELESS?
Many people ask us the question, “How can I help people who are HOPELESS?” as they come to the Fort Worth Hope Center. People come to the Fort Worth Hope Center to get answers. They come with questions about how are they going to put food on the table that week, or how are they going pay their rent to avoid being evicted. People need answers because without them, they have no Hope. Many of the people we serve are looking for jobs, but lack professional skills.
HOPELESSNESS first of all starts in their minds and then is expressed in their emotions. They are so discouraged and depressed, that hinders them from finding work and it prevents them from finding the type of job that they are best suited for. People often end up settling for any type of low-paying job that does not really meet their needs.
What is the answer? What does the Fort Worth Hope Center offer individuals who come to us with hopelessness in their hearts and minds?
We have found that the first thing hopeless people need is have someone look them in the eye and says, “I care about YOU.” The Bible says the eye are the windows of the soul. You can see the emotional desperation in the eyes of individuals who are hopeless. As we look into the faces of people who are in desperate need, eye contact is so important. It says to them “you are important to us.”
Some Bible verses that emphasize the importance of eye contact and kind words
Kind words are like honey— sweet to the soul and healthy for the body.
Psalm 32:8 (NIV)
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.
Your servant has found favor in your eyes, and you have shown great kindness to me…
Over time we have seen how amazing it is to look people in the eye and see a calm comes over them as they are beginning to experience being heard and finding someone who cares for them. As a person begins to feel they are significant and important to us they began to relax and let go of their hopelessness. People become more open to hope that comes from the Lord. The Bible says that God is the Source of hope:
I pray that God, the source of HOPE, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in Him. Then you will overflow with confident HOPE through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Hope is not tangible, it is spiritual. Hope is as real as the wind. Just because you can't see the wind, does not mean that it's not real. You can see the results of wind as it blows on trees and grass and you can feel wind as it blows in your face. But you can’t “see” it. That is the way it is when a person experiences HOPE.
A person can feel hope when someone genuinely cares for them. The Fort Worth Hope Center was created to be a place where people can come in contact with someone who can give them HOPE. As we give out an abundance of food for their family the daily fear of not having enough food for their children calms down. As they learn how we can help them earn certifications in driving various Forklifts or training in Culinary arts and Customer Service, they began to realize they CAN do it and their is real HOPE for finding a good job. We fight hunger by providing food for them and we feed hope through our educational programs at our School of Hope, that prepares our individuals to find great jobs. But all of this is meaningless without genuine LOVE for the people. The Bible says that there is "Faith, HOPE and LOVE ....but the greatest of these is LOVE". They all work together to as we help those who come to us in a time of need.
Our staff is taught to be a "glove"
that the Lord can wear to meet the needs of the people who comes to us for help. A glove has no power or purpose by itself, but when a hand is in the glove, the glove can do anything the hand is doing. Our goal is that all our staff allows the Lord to wear them as a glove; to love the people that come our way and to assist them in finding HOPE in their time of need.
